When the San Rafael High School community came back from summer vacation, returning students wondered the same question: “Where’s Mr. Dennis?” The principal of San Rafael High School Glenn Dennis has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a type of blood cancer.

On July 22nd, 2021, Mr. Dennis was admitted to the emergency room, undergoing a set of tests, and began treatment for the effects of leukemia. Before being rushed to the ER, Mr. Dennis was experiencing unnatural symptoms such as shortness of breath while doing simple tasks such as going up flights of stairs. 

Even though Mr. Dennis is going through extraordinary treatments at the hospital and home, according to Mr. Dennis, it “will have to be paired up with an allogeneic bone marrow transplant.”

This surgery will leave Mr. Dennis with a 6-to-9-month recovery, which means that he will most likely be out for the rest of the 2021-22 school year. 

Alexander Peck, a staff member at SRHS, has been chosen to be the interim principal at San Rafael High School. Mr. Peck, stated in an interview that he was, “nominated as the interim principal, and I’m honored that I have the opportunity to work for such a phenomenal community.”

Mr. Peck has a Master’s Degree in Education Administration and Leadership, which makes him qualified to take on the role of interim principal of SRHS. Mr. Peck says, “My role as a leader is to support teachers so they can provide our community with the best experience possible for college and career readiness.”

The San Rafael community has been affected due to Mr. Dennis’ absence. People in the Associated Student Body (ASB) class have been affected more than others because they were working with Mr. Dennis for school events.  

Emily Spence, a Senior at San Rafael High School and a member of ASB said, “Peck is definitely still getting the hang of things and he’s pretty professional and similar to Dennis. They both have the same goals in making the school a better place.”

Spence said, “I didn’t get to see him much in action but I know that Mr. Dennis leads the site council meeting which involves some principals, secretaries, parents, and some staff members.” 

After being concerned about his can health, the result from the ER diagnosed Mr. Dennis with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Mr. Dennis had to undergo many hospital stays, such as a 26-day stay at an oncology center to conduct chemotherapy. He was given three different chemo drugs to help fight his acute myeloid leukemia. Mr. Dennis said, “The goal of the chemotherapy was to destroy the leukemia cells in my bone marrow,” which has been successful. The cancer is currently in remission. 

Although Mr. Dennis is currently undergoing treatments and is winning the battle with cancer, he is getting prepared for his second round of chemotherapy. It is said that AML has “a tendency to reoccur” so the doctors in charge of Mr. Dennis are offering consolidation chemotherapy to make sure that the cancer does not relapse. The consolidation chemotherapy is being used in order “to destroy any remnants of leukemia that may be present, but undetected,” according to Mr. Dennis. This treatment will take Mr. Dennis a 5-day hospital stay and continues with 14-day’s worth of chemo pills.

“As an interim principal, I have the opportunity to work with the community to make policy changes.  As well, I have many more opportunities to engage with the community as a whole. Currently, I’m still running a few student committees that I’m passionate about the Peer Solution Team and SLAM! (Student Leaders for Anti-Racism Movement),” said Mr. Peck. Although Mr. Peck is facing a full schedule, he still makes time for the extracurricular activities he’s in, such as SLAM, which is a good feature to have as a principal. 

Mr. Peck is not carrying all this weight on his own. He has help from coworkers, such as Armando Oseguera, the new assistant principal at San Rafael High School. “His temporary departure from campus has led Mr. Peck and I to try our best to manage the administrative chores amongst the two of us,” Mr. Oseguera said of Mr. Dennis’ diagnosis. “We have a terrific support team, and Mr. Mayoral will be assisting us a couple of days a week, but our work schedule has grown as we try to handle the start of the school year, COVID, and the return to in-person learning.” 

Mr. Peck and Mr. Oseguera have had a lot on their plate since Mr. Dennis’ absence, which shows how much of an impact he has left on the San Rafael community. As Mr. Oseguera said, “He works tirelessly to ensure that students’ and teachers’ daily needs are addressed, while also planning for future years and developing existing academic programs.” 

Mayerlis Qui, a senior at San Rafael High School, said, “There have been a lot more sightings of Mr. Peck ever since he took the role of interim principal. He has been able to contribute more to the school and is the help we need as a community. Mr. Dennis’ departure has affected all of us, we do miss having him around and having his support, even if it has been through a screen recently.”

Cuando la comunidad de San Rafael High School regresó de las vacaciones de verano, los estudiantes se hicieron la misma pregunta: “¿Dónde está el Sr. Dennis?” El director de la escuela preparatoria de San Rafael, Glenn Dennis, ha sido diagnosticado con leucemia mieloide aguda, un tipo de cáncer en la sangre.

El 22 de julio de 2021, el Sr. Dennis fue admitido en la sala de emergencias, se sometió a una serie de pruebas y comenzó el tratamiento para los efectos de la leucemia. Emily Spence, estudiante de último año en San Rafael High School y miembro de CEA, dijo: “Definitivamente, el Sr. Peck está entendiendo las cosas, es bastante profesional y similar a Dennis. Ambos tienen los mismos objetivos para hacer de la escuela un lugar mejor “.

Spence dijo: “No pude verlo mucho en acción, pero sé que el Sr. Dennis dirige la reunión del consejo de sitio que involucra a algunos directores, secretarias, padres y algunos miembros del personal”.

El resultado de la sala de emergencias diagnosticó al Sr. Dennis con leucemia mieloide aguda (LMA). El Sr. Dennis tuvo que pasar por muchas estadías en el hospital. Un ejemplo es su estadía de 26 días en un centro de oncología para su tratamiento de quimioterapia. Le administraron tres medicamentos diferentes para ayudar a combatir su leucemia mieloide aguda. El Sr. Dennis dijo: “El objetivo de la quimioterapia era destruir las células leucémicas de mi médula ósea”, lo que ha tenido éxito. Actualmente, el cáncer está en remisión.

Aunque el Sr. Dennis se encuentra actualmente en tratamiento y está ganando la batalla contra el cáncer, se está preparando para su segunda ronda de quimioterapia. Se dice que la LMA tiene “una tendencia a reaparecer”, por lo que los médicos a cargo del Sr. Dennis están ofreciendo quimioterapia de consolidación para asegurarse de que el cáncer no regrese. La quimioterapia de consolidación se está utilizando para “destruir cualquier remanente de leucemia que pueda estar presente, pero que aun no sea detectada”, según Dennis. Este tratamiento le llevará al Sr. Dennis una estadía en el hospital de 5 días y continuará con 14 días de píldoras de quimioterapia.

“Como director interino, tengo la oportunidad de trabajar con la comunidad para realizar cambios en las políticas. Además, tengo muchas más oportunidades para relacionarme con la comunidad en su conjunto. Actualmente, todavía dirijo algunos comités de estudiantes que me apasionan el equipo de soluciones de pares y SLAM. (Estudiantes Líderes del Movimiento Anti-Racismo) ”, dijo el Sr. Peck. Aunque el Sr. Peck enfrenta un horario completo, todavía tiene tiempo para las actividades extracurriculares en las que participa, como SLAM, que es una buena practica para tener como director.

El Sr. Peck no lleva todo este peso solo. Cuenta con la ayuda de compañeros de trabajo, como Armando Oseguera, el nuevo subdirector de San Rafael High School. “Su salida temporal del campus nos ha llevado al Sr. Peck y a mí a hacer todo lo posible para manejar las tareas administrativas entre nosotros dos”, dijo Oseguera sobre el diagnóstico de Dennis. “Tenemos un excelente equipo de apoyo y el Sr. Mayoral nos ayudará un par de días a la semana, pero nuestro horario de trabajo ha crecido a medida que tratamos de manejar el inicio del año escolar, COVID y el regreso a la escuela en persona.”

El Sr. Peck y el Sr. Oseguera han tenido mucho en su plato desde la ausencia del Sr. Dennis, lo que muestra el impacto que ha dejado en la comunidad de San Rafael. Como dijo el Sr. Oseguera, “Trabaja incansablemente para garantizar que se aborden las necesidades diarias de los estudiantes y maestros, al mismo tiempo que planifica los años futuros y desarrolla los programas académicos existentes”.

Mayerlis Qui, estudiante de último año en San Rafael High School, dijo: “Ha habido muchos más avistamientos del Sr. Peck desde que asumió el cargo de director interino. Ha podido contribuir más a la escuela y es la ayuda que necesitamos como comunidad. La partida del Sr. Dennis nos ha afectado a todos, extrañamos tenerlo cerca y contar con su apoyo, incluso si ha sido virtualmente estos dias”.
