In the last couple of years, the amount of American college students who study abroad has increased by almost 50%, signaling that students are starting to prioritize global experience more and more.
With the world becoming increasingly connected through technology and culture, studying abroad is more important than ever before. In today’s globalized world, studying abroad has become highly beneficial for college students, as it provides opportunities to connect with different cultures, work on professionalism, and achieve personal goals and growth. Studying abroad should be something that is considered by every college student in today’s era.
The value of studying abroad is constantly seen in the job market, and continues to be a factor in employment. With many businesses expanding internationally, companies are seeking those who have experience in navigating the challenges of different cultures and languages. According to the World Economic Forum, 64% of employers factor global experience into the hiring process, and report that those with this background are often given greater professional opportunities and responsibilities. Companies may favor those with international experience because of their ability to understand and work with the challenges of the worldwide job market, so college students should take advantage of their opportunities to study abroad and gain this exposure, as it will only help them in the future.
Studying abroad also allows students to develop necessary skills, such as the ability to communicate with a variety of people and adapt to different circumstances. These qualities are key when working in diverse environments, which you’re certain to face when you get a job. La Salle University found that 81% of employers view intercultural communication skills as important to have.
Also, students with study abroad experience are more fit to understand and act on international business opportunities. For example, if a student studied in Spain for a semester abroad, then they will have hands-on experience and knowledge about how businesses and consumers act there, and it will further help them and their company expand into that region. When a student has experience studying abroad, they are not only gaining expertise, but will be able to bring insight and ability to the workplace.
As San Rafael High School senior Scarlett Greenwood sees it, “Studying abroad would be an enriching experience for young students in a lot of different ways.” This experience allows for young students to step out of their comfort zone and gain independence and confidence. According to IES Abroad, a non-profit organization administering study abroad programs, over 96% of students report increased self confidence upon returning home.
When thinking about the pros and cons of studying abroad, many can’t ignore the price that comes with being a foreign student. It can be viewed as unnecessary because the cost of travel, tuition, housing, and living expenses can sometimes be more expensive in a foreign country rather than here in America. While cost can be an important factor when it comes to making decisions about education, it shouldn’t be what stops you from studying overseas.
Ways for college students to work towards being able to afford studying abroad includes specific scholarships or financial aid from their school, over 40 external scholarships and grants, or finding the most cost effective locations. Every year, almost 3,000 American students are awarded the Gilman Scholarship, which can provide up to $5,000 per person. As long as you take advantage of these scholarship opportunities and find a program that aligns with your goals, the idea of studying abroad should not be shut down just because of cost.
One of the biggest reasons why I believe that studying abroad should be widely considered is because above all else, it would be fun. At no other time in your life would you be able to learn new languages, explore new cultures, and see historical parts of the world, all while gaining both personal and career development.
San Rafael senior Angeline Phan shares that studying abroad interests her for many reasons, with one being because of the opportunities “to experience a new environment and gain knowledge at the same time.” Being an international student not only broadens your view on the rest of the world, it also exposes you to different perspectives and education that you might not get at home.
Getting the opportunity to study overseas is an incredibly valuable experience and opportunity as it offers so much more than just academic development. It allows you to immerse yourself in new environments, gain essential skills, and open many doors to opportunities for your career. Studying abroad should be considered by every student who is looking to make the most out of their education and future profession.
