As the summer came to an end and the school year was approaching, San Rafael High’s administrative team welcomed aboard former SRHS counselor, Armando Oseguera, who had planned to leave.

The San Rafael High school community was informed late last spring that counselor Mr. Oseguera would be accepting a role as assistant principal at a local school, Terra Linda High. After going back to graduate school for his administrative credential, he had been looking for an assistant principal’s position. 

“In order to continue my growth as a professional, I definitely wanted to step more into the admin role,” Oseguera said.

After applying for the position at TLHS, he was interviewed by a hiring committee and accepted. He had planned to continue his career at TLHS as their assistant principal for the 2021-2022 school year. Terra Linda High’s principal, Katy Dunlap, believed Mr. Oseguera would bring quality attributes to their school.

“Mr. Oseguera has served several years as a bilingual counselor in our school district at both San Rafael High and Davidson Middle,” Mrs. Dunlap stated through email. Mr. Oseguera is well known and respected throughout San Rafael City Schools and is familiar with the community.

This transition would be bittersweet for Oseuguera. He is a huge part of the SRHS community and has made connections with staff and students in every grade. “He was a great counselor,” said sophomore Halle Hirschkop. “Even through online school, he was a great resource for help.

Later on towards the end of the 2021 summer, the community was struck with the news of SRHS principal Glen Dennis’s illness and his treatment plan. He would not be returning for the upcoming semester. This completely altered San Rafael High School’s administrative team. As Mr. Peck stepped up, there needed to be another helping hand. They were looking for an assistant principal who could work with Mr. Peck.

With his familiarity with the school, staff, and students, Mr. Oseguera was the perfect candidate for this position. Mr. Oseguera expressed his interest in this role. Having already secured his spot at TLHS, the decision on whether he would return to SRHS was made collaboratively between Terra Linda High Schools principal, Katy Dunlap, and SRCS superintendent, Jim Hogeboom. 

In support of the school, they agreed it would be best for the community to allow Oseuguera to return. After making this decision, Superintendent Hogeboom said to Principle Dunlap, “While Armando was very much looking forward to the opportunity at TLHS and partnering with all of you, I am grateful that all have agreed that this move makes the most sense given the difficult situation at hand.”

This sudden change could have put TL in a difficult position at the start of the school year with a position unfilled. “Supporting SRHS was our primary concern…The administration was well prepared to start school,” Dunlap said. She had made the decision to retain an Interim Assistant Principal of Student Services at TL for the 2021-22 school year. 

“She was a huge support, and she encouraged me to come back,” Oseguera said about Principal Dunlap. 

Now Mr. Oseuguera now takes on the role of assistant principal at San Rafael High School. He is loved and well known among staff members and students. 

“I am super grateful that he is sticking around,” said English teacher Mr Boris. “I think he is awesomely competent.”

Mr. Oseguera does not plan on transferring next year and plans to stay at San Rafael high school until he is ready to leave. Eventually he wants to become a principal or take on another role in administration.

A medida que el verano llegaba a su fin y se acercaba el año escolar, el equipo administrativo de San Rafael High dio la bienvenida a bordo al ex-consejero de SRHS, Armando Oseguera, quien había planeado irse.

La comunidad de la escuela preparatoria de San Rafael fue informada a fines de la primavera pasada que el consejero, Sr. Oseguera, aceptaría un papel como subdirector en una escuela local, Terra Linda High. Después de regresar a la escuela de posgrado para obtener su credencial administrativa, había estado buscando un puesto de subdirector.

“Para continuar mi crecimiento como profesional, definitivamente quería dar un paso más en el rol de administrador”, dijo Oseguera.

Después de postularse para el puesto en TLHS, fue entrevistado por un comité de contratación y aceptado. Había planeado continuar su carrera en TLHS como subdirector para el año escolar 2021-2022. La directora de Terra Linda High, Katy Dunlap, creía que el Sr. Oseguera aportaría atributos de calidad a su escuela.
“El Sr. Oseguera se ha desempeñado durante varios años como consejero bilingüe en nuestro distrito escolar tanto en San Rafael High como en Davidson Middle”, dijo la Sra. Dunlap por correo electrónico. El Sr. Oseguera es bien conocido y respetado en todas las escuelas de la ciudad de San Rafael y está familiarizado con la comunidad.

Esta transición sería agridulce para Oseguera. Él es una gran parte de la comunidad de SRHS y ha establecido conexiones con el personal y los estudiantes de todos los grados. “Fue un gran consejero”, dijo la estudiante de segundo año Halle Hirschkop. “Incluso a través de la escuela en línea, fue un gran recurso de ayuda”.

Mas adelante, hacia el final del verano de 2021, la comunidad se sorprendió con la noticia de la enfermedad del director de SRHS, Glen Dennis, y su plan de tratamiento. No regresaría para el próximo semestre. Esto alteró completamente el equipo administrativo de la Preparatoria San Rafael. Cuando el Sr. Peck se acercó, era necesario que hubiera otra mano amiga. Buscaban un subdirector que pudiera trabajar con el Sr. Peck.

Debido a su familiaridad con la escuela, el personal y los estudiantes, el Sr. Oseguera era el candidato perfecto para este puesto. El Sr. Oseguera expresó su interés en este rol. Habiendo asegurado ya su lugar en TLHS, la decisión sobre si regresaría a SRHS se tomó en colaboración entre la directora de Terra Linda High Schools, Katy Dunlap, y el superintendente de SRCS, Jim Hogeboom.

En apoyo de la escuela, acordaron que sería mejor para la comunidad permitir que Oseuguera regresara. Después de tomar esta decisión, el superintendente Hogeboom le dijo al director Dunlap: “Si bien Armando estaba ansioso por la oportunidad en TLHS y se asoció con todos ustedes, estoy agradecido de que todos hayan estado de acuerdo en que este movimiento tiene más sentido dada la difícil situación.”

Este cambio repentino podría haber puesto a TL en una posición difícil al comienzo del año escolar con un puesto vacante. “Apoyar a SRHS fue nuestra principal preocupación… La administración estaba bien preparada para iniciar el ciclo escolar”, dijo Dunlap. Ella había tomado la decisión de contratar a un subdirector interino de Servicios Estudiantiles en TL para el año escolar 2021-22.

“Ella fue un gran apoyo y me animó a volver”, dijo Oseguera sobre la directora Dunlap.

Ahora, el Sr. Oseguera ahora asume el papel de subdirector en San Rafael High School. Es amado y conocido entre los miembros del personal y los estudiantes.

“Estoy muy feliz de que se quede”, dijo el profesor de inglés, Sr. Boris. “Creo que es increíblemente competente”.

El Sr. Oseguera planea quedarse en la escuela preparatoria San Rafael. Con el tiempo, quiere convertirse en director o asumir otro papel en la administración.
